To book trailer, or not to book trailer, that is the question

I have noticed that quite a few indie authors are making book trailers for their novels.  I have to admit I have never considered this has an option for myself, nor have I actually watched any, (ok, lie, now I have just watched one).  I would like to get everyone’s opinion on what they feel are the positive and negatives of having a book trailer for your novel.  Also, if you have done one yourself, how do you feel about it?  I am just curious and wonder if this might be a good alternative marketing branch I have not yet ventured into.

  1. Haven't done it but know some folks who have. I think it's one piece of marketing and likely not a very important piece unless you create a VERY interesting, stand-out trailer that goes viral.

  2. I absolutely plan on doing a book trailer but not like the traditional book trailers we're used to seeing. Mine will most likely include interviews, sights from the places I'm using as the setting, etc. I plan to sort of cross the line between fiction and reality. But that comes from my writing, where I've have pulled in events, places, and things that relate to me or my family. I want to use a book trailer in that very same way.

So, I'm thinking a little outside of the box on this. But I think it's totally up to you. Think about how you could do it so that it would pull readers into your story and not just be your typical trailer. Otherwise, what's the point. Make it add to your book, not just something you do in addition to your book.

Note though, I haven't even published my book yet. So feel free not to go with a word I've written.

  4. Sorry, errors in the last one:

I think that if you are going to create one, then it needs to be effective and not just create one to have one. If you are going to have bloggers reviewing your book, then you should have a trailer to go with the review. I have noticed that the video is why I go out and get the book right away instead of putting it on my to be read list. Big publishers don't just pay people to create the trailers unless they think that they are going to increase sales, right?

  5. Thanks for all the advice. I don't know anything about creating a book trailer, so it looks like I have some research to do.

  6. I have been experimenting with a trailer using keynote on my mac. I have a lot of work to do on it but I silently released it on Youtube ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaC0XCqNGyQ ) just to see what kind of reaction it would get.

I just wanted to see if it was possible to do it by myself. I'll probably turn it over to my 'guy' so it can be done professionally.
