This, That and The Other Thing

First, and foremost, I have to say - Melissa Shepard you rock!  I finally have the word counting widget on my blog!  Check out my status.

So, I have decided that during the week I am much less productive in my writing then I am on the weekend so I am going to focus on other things during the week.  I hope to have the first few chapters of my second book (a vampire novel, which I'm super excited about because its totally different then every vampire book I have seen) outlined by the weekend and then I will go back to writing my paranormal romance - Agents of Evil.  Which, surprise, I am thinking of changing the title for.  I do, however, have a very high goal for myself this weekend that I am going to try my hardest to reach - I want to write 10,000 words by Sunday night. So cross your fingers for me everyone.

I dabbled in working on creating my own cover art last night, and wasn't successful. I am still not sure which direction I want to go with it, but I still have plenty of time. Getting a little ahead of myself, as always.

I have been noticing on a lot of blogs that there is debating going on for the price of ebooks.  It's a $0.99 vs $2.99 war.  I personally don't think there is a wrong choice between these two prices, they are both really low.  I think I will be going with $0.99 to start, just because I want build my reader base.  What are your thoughts?

Well, I think that is the end of my rant for today.  I hope everyone is having a great week, happy writing!

  1. Wow Megan, you have written quite a bit!! Good job! And thanks for the shout out ;)

I think you could hit your 10,000 word goal by Sunday. You are on fire! I commend you in trying to do your own cover. I think the biggest selling points of a book are the cover, blurb, price, and reviews. The reviews, I really have no control over them, other than to make sure I put out the best product I can. The blurb I can handle, and the price can be easily adjusted, but the cover is an area that even if I did learn the software, I just don't think I could come up with something very appealing. I am just going to get one designed when I get to that point.

As for price, I haven't decided whether to go with $.99 or $2.99 yet. I think I would have better chances of building a reader base with $.99 though. I still have time to decide before I publish, so I will see what the market is doing at that time. If I do decide to make this book the beginning of a series that I will go with $.99 for the first book and $2.99 for the others.

  2. Hey Megan! The 10k word goal is ambitious but doable. It's great if you can get pumped up to do a big day or two, then it can really bring you much closer to the end of the tunnel in such a short time.

I once did a 10k word day, but it burnt me out pretty hard, I was like a zombie afterwards. But it felt great to accomplish so much in such a short timeframe.

You know my dilemmas with covers and pricing so I won't go into it here. Suffice it to say, I wish I had the answers.

  5. I am a non-fiction writer so everything I write has a caveat attached. I sell my books from $2.99 to $4.99. At first I tried to sell my first books at $7.99 and higher. I think I sold one book in three months. Then I read JA Konrath and decided to play with my prices and descriptions, etc. I toyed with .99 cents and had no sales and then I went to $2.99 and my sales picked up and has increased every month (sometimes doubling or tripling the previous month).

I also really prefer the 70% royalty (65% B&N). When I sell 10 books at Amazon I make $20.40 at $2.99. and $30.50 if I sell 10 of my books priced $4.99 cents book. At .99 cents I would only make about $3.50 cents. That is a huge disparity. Do I lose out in sales? I don't know, but I have to ask if the bottom line is worth it too.
